This project began with the story of the building itself. We spent months working alongside the design team on where plants would go and what each one needed to contribute: height, scale, shape, foliage color, planter and how it related to the artwork on each floor.

The San Diego landscape, indoors

As you move up the building, the interiors travel from the ocean and coastline to beach landscapes and, eventually, greener environments. The plants follow the same journey. We deliberately stayed away from a lush tropical look, which would have felt disconnected from that story.

Shape, not just species

Dracaenas were chosen because their architectural form and pointed foliage echo the agaves of Southern California landscapes. Different varieties of Ficus bring natural, tree-like structure to the larger spaces.

Foliage as part of the palette

On the first floor, artwork introduced soft pink tones, and the plants pick them up through their foliage. Where another floor shifts to deeper colors, we used plants with burgundy and purple tones. Sizing took just as long: sometimes a difference of a few feet changed the balance of a whole space.
